LAL Guidelines
and entry coupon are posted at www.pabook.libraries.psu.edu/activities/LALLetters About Literature (LAL) is a national reading and writing program that asks students in
Grades 4 through 12 to write letters to authors whose books have had an impact on the way they think about themselves or the
world around them. The program seeks personal and reflective writing about the importance of books in the lives of young readers.
* Free teaching materials, including lesson plans, assessment checklists, writing samples,
plus teaching tips for using LAL in the classroom can be found at www.lettersaboutliterature.org* In the spring, PA award winners in each category get a cash prize
plus a $50 gift certificate from Target.
* LAL gives $10,000 reading promotion grants
to the school or community library of each of the six national award winners. In addition, twelve national runners-up receive
a $100 Target Giftcard and a $1000 grant for the library of their choice. The three top Pennsylvania letters are entered in
this exciting national round, and last year, Xio Torres from Reading, PA was a national honor winner in Level 3!
With support from Target, the Library of Congress sponsors LAL with its local affiliate, the Pennsylvania Center for the
Book.
Each letter must be accompanied by an entry coupon which can be found and printed from the guideline Web
